Playing a very famous piano piece here, do you recognise it?
Thinking about the people in LA who have lost their homes or lives, the situation in Canada where a new “old” man views politics as a clown show, cracking bad jokes. Then there’s Greenland, and in Austria, people will soon have to deal with a new far-right chancellor, simply because the other democratic parties failed to find solutions and instead acted like children in a sandbox.
Looking at Germany, the upcoming elections seem poised to bring either the far-right extremist party or the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to power. The difference? The far-right openly opposes human rights for everyone, including the LGBTQ+ community, while its leader—a woman living in Switzerland with her wife and their two adopted children (no, this isn’t satire)—spreads hate and misinformation. Meanwhile, the CDU is led by an old misogynist who believes wind turbines are an eyesore and should be removed, opposes abortion rights, and proposes stripping dual citizens of German nationality if they commit a crime, as a “solution” to criminal immigrants.
It’s strange to think that I, born and raised in Germany, hold two passports and would risk losing my citizenship if I committed a crime (not that I plan to). Yet a “real” German who abuses children faces a maximum of 10 years in prison.
Just a little summary of my thoughts 💭
