The Westfjords region of Iceland is a remote and raw escape from the popular Ring Road route. Only a few tiny towns dotted throughout the region are inhabited and driving the winding roads for hours at a time make a visit to the Westfjords a unique adventure.
Summer is a great time to visit the Westfjords; hotels and restaurants are open, roads are easier to drive, and the endless daylight will allow you to see and do so much. Spend some time whale watching, kayaking in the fjords or take a boat to Hornstrandir for a day of hiking in the natural preserve. The Westfjords also has puffins, Arctic Foxes, waterfalls, beaches, dramatic and sweeping views and some great restaurants.
To truly enjoy all that the Westfjords offer, I recommend 3 full days of travel. Utilize the ferry to/from Stykkisholmur on Snæfellsnes Peninsula and bring a bathing suit - there are lots of hot pots.
